The butterfly counts not months but moments, and has time enough.
Be a child again. Flirt. Giggle. Dip your cookies in your milk. Take a nap. Say you’re sorry if you hurt someone. Chase a butterfly. Be a child again.
Do you read them before buying a book, to see if it’s worth it? Do you read them after you’re done with the book, to see if you have the same opinion?
If I’m considering buying it, before. If I really like it, after. If I hate it, during the book.
Think of a caterpillar entering a cocoon. Once he does so, one of two things will happen: He will either transform into a butterfly, or he will die. But no matter what else happens, he will never climb out of the cocoon as a caterpillar.
So it is with your protagonist.
You can’t please everyone.
You cannot write a book that will please everyone. This is why sharing your work is so hard. Letting people read your writing, will always be intimidating and feel intrinsically personal. What you have to realise is that no matter how good or how bad your book might be, there will always be people who love it and people who hate it.
There will always be people who are better writers than you are and there will always be people who are lesser writers than you are. You might be brilliant to some and nothing to others. This is okay. This is more than okay, this is good. All you have to do, is write something for yourself, then let it out there and soon you can be assured there are other people out there who are like you. You are not alone. No matter how strange or out there or boring your book is, if it relates to you, it will relate to some others as well. Do not expect everyone to love your work, and do not be disappointed by haters.
